1861 Proof Set with Gold

The year 1861 would be the last to begin in peace until 1866, and a healthy Proof mintage of 1,000 pieces would insure the availability of these coins for generations to come. The Indian Cent is quite tough in high grade, and priced far higher than one might expect. The gold is naturally quite rare, and despite the seemingly generous mintage, experts estimate far fewer were sold. The Double Eagle is particularly rare, with only half a dozen estimated to have survived. None have yet been offered at auction this century. The lower denomination gold coins ($1 - $3) were minted in greater quantity than the higher denomination ($5-$20) coins.
