1884 is represented by several tough issues, although the San Francisco dollar is certainly the most popular coin in this set. The Carson City half eagle and eagle are much rarer than the 1884-S silver dollar, but they do not have the allure associated with the San Francisco dollar. The 1884-S dime is also a key for this set, as are the half eagle and eagle from this mint, although they are available in the lower Uncirculated grades. The 1884-S double eagle is found a little more often than the Carson City double eagle, although neither is available in gem condition. The three cent nickel for this year is another coin that will require diligence to locate in nice Uncirculated condition. This is a key Mint set because of the 1884-S silver dollar, but the Carson City gold issues are the real keys to its completion.
