1873 Mint Set with Gold

This year brought numerous changes to U.S. coinage with the passage of the Mint Act of 1873. Four denominations were discontinued; the 2¢ piece, the 3¢ silver piece, the Half Dime and the Silver Dollar (though only temporarily) and a very slight increase in weight for the Dime, Quarter and Half resulted in arrows appearing next to the date for the second time. As this Act went into effect part way into the year, both varieties of the minor silver coins appear both with and without arrows, making this set quite large. The 1873 Mint Set with just the copper and silver coinage is not any easier to complete than the one with the gold, as the silver issues include a unique issue (1873-CC No Arrows dime) and an ultra rarity (1873-CC No Arrows quarter). These trophy coins are among the most popular silver rarities and only a single Mint Set is possible, of course, as the unique Eliasberg 1873-CC No Arrows dime mandates that scenario. Even without the two legendary rarities, there are several other elusive issues, among them the 1873-S half dollar. The No Arrows and Arrows dime, quarter, and half dollar make this set even more popular with collectors, as these coins can do double duty as examples for type sets. The gold issues have numerous rarities, all three eagles (P, CC, and S), as well as the 1873 and 1873-S half eagles with none of these issues usually found above Almost Uncirculated – several of them having no examples graded Mint State by PCGS. This is an incredible Mint Set, as the number of issues is quite large and the rarity of numerous issues makes this a highlight set for any collector.
