1808 Mint Set with Gold

In 1808, the Capped Bust Left design introduced the previous year on the Half Dollar spread to the Cent. This resulted in a rather odd looking set, as the Half Cent still was using the older Draped Bust Right design. None of the three 1808 Copper or Silver issues is too difficult, and this transitional set would always make a nice display. The gold portion of the set includes one of the rarest of all U.S. type coins; the one-year 1808 Quarter Eagle. While some 130 pieces are estimated to have survived, prices are quite high due to the strong demand this coin enjoys from type collectors. Even a nice AU can cross the six-figure threshold, so completing this set will require more money than patience. The Half Eagle this year is a comparative bargain.
