The 1964 Proof Set marked the end of an era. It would be the last Proof Set from the Philadelphia Mint (which had struck virtually all the Proof Coins up to his point). It would also be the last Proof set to include examples of our circulating silver coins. Finally, it would be the last Proof set to appear in the flexible plastic packaging which had debuted in 1955. Because it is a landmark set in many respects, it has a huge following on the Registry with nearly 150 listed sets. The original die displayed more prominent hair above the ear of Kennedy. At the request of Mrs. Kennedy, the hair was modified to be smoother and less prominent. This early "Accented Hair" variety appears only on the earliest 1964 Proofs, and top quality DC examples today can trade into five figures. Lesser quality examples however, are far more affordable.
