1943-S Washington Quarter. FS-501. Trumpet Tail S. MS-64 (NGC). This scarce and conditionally challenging variety has the upper serif of the S mintmark pointing down as opposed to both up and down as seen on the common Large S variety of the 1943-S quarter. Additional diagnostics of the FS-501 Trumpet Tail S include a die gouge in Washington's hair, doubling to the digit 4 in the date and a tiny die gouge in the field to the right of the mintmark. Beautiful frosty-white surfaces for the present near-Gem are free of both toning and distracting abrasions.
