- 1867 Liberty Seated Dime. Fortin-102. Rarity-5. Doubled Die Reverse. MS-66 (PCGS). CAC.
This handsome Gem is originally toned in blushes of powder blue, pinkish-russet, pale gold and antique silver iridescence. Full satin to semi-prooflike luster is as fresh and vibrant as the day the coin emerged from the dies. An impressive rarity in all grades, both circulated and Mint State, the circulation strike 1867 was produced to the extent of just 6,000 pieces. Having disappeared from circulation early in the Civil War, silver coinage continued to be hoarded in the Eastern states for several years after Lee's surrender at Appomattox Courthouse, thereby explaining the limited output from the Philadelphia Mint for issues such as the 1867 Liberty Seated dime. This date is actually easier to find as a Proof, and Mint State survivors, as here, have an impressive Rarity-5 ranking on Gerry Fortin's seateddimevarieties.comwebsite irrespective of die pairing.
