- THE B.S.T. COLLECTION Ex Col. E.H.R. Green and Eric P. Newman Collections, as noted on the insert. A very high grade and very appealing GEM that is the FINEST KNOWN of this Rarity-5- die marriage. Finer than any that are listed in either the Tompkins or the Rea-Koenings-Haroutunian Census listings, this GEM also served as the Plate coin in the Browning reference on early quarters, first published in the 1920s! This is only the second time that it is appearing in auction in the modern era. A gorgeous, brilliant mint luster blooms boldly all over on both sides. The brilliance is intense and semi-reflective in places. Gorgeous peripheral blues, golds, amber-orange, purples, and greens that the lustrous fields accentuate. The colors burst forth from the surfaces as you rotate the surfaces in a light. The devices are nicely struck. A strong glass will aid in the location of a few tiny ticks, ancient and unobtrusive to the outstanding eye appeal. This GEM is certainly worthy of NGC's "*" designation for outstanding eye appeal. The 1828 quarters were the last of the large size type, and the denomination would not be coined again until 1831, by which time William Kneass had altered the design from John Reich's; slimming Liberty's portrait down, making her less buxom, and removing the ribbon with E PLURIBUS UNUM from the reverse. At Rarity-5- the B-2 is the second RAREST die pairing of the year, behind the popular 25/50 B-3 which is a full Rarity-5. Ex Browning Reference Collection; Col. E.H.R. Green Collection; Green Estate; Purchased by St. Louis Stamp & Coin (partnership of B.G. Johnson and Eric P. Newman); Eric P. Newman Collection; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage, November 2013, lot 33347; our consignor, via Legend Numismatics. PCGS 4, NGC 2, CAC 2. This coin last sold in 2013 realizing $32,900. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $40,000 and the CAC CPG value is $34,800. The other CAC coin is a PCGS MS65+ that brought just shy of $50,000 in its last appearance a decade ago. There is a single MS67 graded by NGC finer, a coin that realized $102,000 in August 2022. This coin is worthy of a very strong bid and placement in another world class cabinet. Good luck. Cert.
