- COSTA RICA. Costa Rica - Peru. "Carrillo" 2 Reales, ND (1841). San Jose Mint. PCGS VF-35 Gold Shield; Countermark: EF Details.
KM-11(plate coin); Guardian-Type VI. Type I Countermark. Issued by Decree of 19 November 1841, by President Braulio Carrillo Colina. RAREhost coin. Initial test punch on obverse between "FIRME" and "Y" of the legend, plug removed from reverse above the arms of Peru, double six-pointed star applied to center of obverse. All on an 1826-LIMA JM Peru Republic 2 Reales. Countermark deeply applied with luster in the outer ring. Overall an attractive example of this elusive type much nicer than normally encountered from this series with lovely old mottled envelope patina displaying a multitude of hues throughout.
The test punch and removal of the plug of silver is standard for this issue. To verify that the coins were in fact silver they tested them first with the punch mark in the legend. They then proceeded to remove the plug of silver and then apply the double six-pointed star countermark. According to sources the removal of the plug of silver was done to pay for the countermarking of these coins. While this cataloger believes this to be true, I also believe that regardless of denomination they were all mutilated in a similar fashion with the test punch, plug removal and star countermark all in the same general locations for each type of host coin.
Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500.
Provenance: From the Kyle Ponterio Collection.
Ex: Richard Stuart Collection.
