- A wonderful early Proof and a MAJOR RARITY! Only a dozen were estimated to have been struck, thus considered to be a Low Rarity-7 as a Proof. Overall, the 1836 Reeded Edge half dollar is a very important KEY to the Capped Bust series, with only 1,200 or so struck for circulation. The first of these were struck on November 8, 1836 and were the first coins struck on the new steam powered presses. Once considered to be patterns, the 1836 Reeded Edge is listed as Judd-57.
Boasting richly and deeply toned surfaces that retain quite a bit of watery-textured reflection in the fields, this PR62+ looks to be totally original. The devices are chiseled sharp and stand out against the surrounding fields. A powerful glass fails to reveal any serious lines or marks of any kind under the rich amber-rose and slate-blue patina. The eye appeal is great for the assigned grade.
PCGS 0, NGC 1. With such a low mintage you know these rarely appear in auction and are rare finer. The most recent NGC-graded example was a PR63 that brought $27,164 in April 2021 (this lower-grade coin has a better look in this cataloger's opinion). The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $36,000 and no doubt this coin will create quite the stir when it crosses the block, who knows when another will cross your path. An important opportunity not to be missed!
