- Ex D. Brent Pogue Collection, as noted on the insert. A wonderful GEM example from this important, popular, first year of type Standing Liberty quarter. Only 52,000 were struck in December 1916, and while some were saved at the time of issue, it remains one of the lowest mintage 20th century coins struck for circulation. GEM examples are always desirable and this date ranks among the 100 Greatest Coins listed by Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth. This one also boasts the Pogue pedigree, noted for its quality and eye appeal. Delicate pastel iridescent toning graces the lustrous surfaces of this glorious design. The details are generally bold and well defined; Liberty's head is struck up enough to warrant the FH designation, and the brads on the shield are all visible, though some are a trifle soft. A wonderful brilliance highlights the surfaces, both fields and devices, and makes the eye appeal really pop. The Standing Liberty quarter, struck late in 1916, joined two other coinage redesigns, the Mercury dime and Walking Liberty half dollar, continuing the Renaissance of American Coinage, that began in 1907 with the Saint Gaudens redesign of the $10 and $20 gold pieces, and would conclude in 1921 with the Peace dollar. Hermon MacNeil's classic designs remains one of the most gorgeous types issued by the mint for circulation. PCGS 87, NGC 52. While the most recent example to sell in auction brought $33,000, this coin realized $43,200 in the Stack's Bowers March 2020 sale of the D. Brent Pogue Collection, Part VII, lot 7147. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $42,500. RARE finer, this GEM is a wonderful example for anyone looking to add or upgrade their set with a great pedigreed piece. Good luck. Cert.
