- One of the quintessential type issues in the Morgan dollar series, the 1880-S also clearly illustrates the history of most issues of the type. The majority of the mintage of 8,900,000 pieces was not needed in circulation and, as of June 30, 1913, remained in storage in the San Francisco Mint. Over the following decades these coins were gradually paid out, many finding their way into the hands of dealers, investors and other numismatists. Dozen of bags were obtained by LaVere Redfield and entered the numismatic market when his estate was marketed in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Readily obtainable, and also expertly produced to include full striking detail on virtually all examples, the 1880-S is an outstanding candidate to represent the Morgan dollar design in a high grade set. And this stunning upper end Gem is untoned apart from wisps of delicate silvery iridescence that allow ready appreciation of a deeply cameoed finish. Sure to please even the most discerning collector.
