- Snow-9, Judd-180 which has a tiny centering dot on the reverse, nearly hidden just beneath the upper left serif of "N" in CENT. The NGC PR-62 grade is perfectly suited (C.A.C. even endorses the coin is upper-tier for the grade, which it probably is) given the fact that the planchet stock may have had tiny as-made fissures that still remain visible on the lower obverse. These serve admirably as provenance markers. Without question, the 1856 flying eagle cent ranks as one of the great collectables in U.S. numismatics despite true status as a pattern. Obviously, they have traditionally been collected right along with the regular circulation strike series, with the limited mintage of 2000 pieces (estimated) having a huge damping effect on what may be called a "complete set". Pinpoint details designate this coin as a proof even without knowing the die-marriage, and the fields, while not truly mirrored, still exhibit some flashy character beneath pleasing olive-brown patina. Post mint abrasions include only a pair of noteworthy marks: a small depression beneath "TA" in STATES, as well as a tiny dig just left of "C" of CENT.
