- One of the most interesting early half dollar varieties, a variety that has been listed in the Red Book for many years. Struck from the first die pair of the new Capped Bust design by John Reich. The reverse has the popular blundered denomination 50/20 as seen on many 1807 halves, but this obverse cracked soon after being employed, with a major break that connects the chin to bust (thus the colorful nickname). Only a small number are known without this break, and are extremely rare. The O-111A shows the crack beginning to form, and the O-111B as here, shows a full break. This is an earlier state of the O-111B, as there are examples that show the break branching off into the eye, hair, and band. Overall, the Bearded Goddess is a tough R-5 variety, and because of its inclusion in the Red Book, it sees much more demand than other varieties of similar rarity. Both sides are evenly toned in a medium dove-silver with hints of gold and some luster remaining. Minor marks are noted, and will serve to identify this piece in the future. Well struck and highly desirable. PCGS 9, NGC 4, CAC 1. No PCGS examples have sold at auction. PCGS has suggested a value of $10,500 in this grade. This coin will be a centerpiece in any collection of early half dollars that features Red Book listed varieties. PCGS # 39357 Certification Number 16346631 PCGS # 039357
