- GUADELOUPE. False Joe with Plug Removed to Pass by Weight, ND (Decree of 22 April, 1803). PCGS AU-53 Secure Holder.
10.79 gms. Gordon-15; VG-Not listed; Maz-Not listed. Plug removed from center of a forged Portuguese Peca or "Joe" dated 1778. The relevant passages located on pg.73 & 74 of "West Indies Countermarked Gold Coins" by Ralph C. Gordon offer much insight into the mysterious nature of holed "Joes" from Guadeloupe. According to the passages in Gordon the decree was most concerned with false plugs in the Joes then circulating on the island and its dependencies. It ordered all plugged Joes be examined by goldsmiths Gobert and Cayolle in Basse-Terre. "The Joes of good gold will be stamped with a G by citizens Gobert and Cayolle and with another mark which will make it possible for them to be recognized." However, the Joes that were determined to have false plugs were to have the plug removed and the remaining ring was to pass by weight. Gordon goes onto state that the results of this decree are apparent in the numerous examples that survived with other marks, but was unable to locate an example for study which only had the plug removed. Since he was unable to locate a specimen for examination he listed these as a theoretical issue. While searching through the famous collections of cut and countermark issues we were unable to locate another example listed in any of the following collections: Fred Pridmore, Ralph C. Gordon, Edward Roehrs (parts I or II), Bob Lyall, Howard D. Gibbs, John J. Ford Jr. or Ray Byrne. EXTREMELY RAREand the only example we are aware of. Very interesting and sure to see spirited bidding from the advanced collector of cut and countermark issues or the connoisseur of West Indies.
Estimate: $2,000 - $3,000.
