- 1856 Round 25 Cents. BG-228. Rarity-7. Liberty Head. AU-55 (PCGS).
Blended golden-honey and rose-apricot colors greet the viewer from satiny, near-fully lustrous surfaces. A concentration of small marks at the star above Liberty's head serves as a useful identifier, although the surfaces are smooth in hand, and uncommonly so for a Period I issue that saw light commercial use. The 2003 Leonard census enumerates 11 examples of this rare issue from Antoine Louis Nouizillet and, while the usual comment "Probably includes duplication" is present, we are aware of two holed examples having been confirmed in more recent years. BG-228 is still highly elusive by any measure, of course, the present example one of only 10 or so known and sure to see spirited bidding among California small denomination gold enthusiasts.
The BG-228 issue features the same obverse die of BG-226A, although repolished for a second time. The reverse die is readily attributable by bold repunching to the letter R in DOLLAR.
