- 1922 No D Lincoln Cent. FS-401, Die Pair II. Strong Reverse. AU-50 BN (NGC). A distinct woodgrain finish covers each side of this smooth, well detailed example. The reverse displays bold definition, while the obverse shows typical softness on the design's high points. An evenly worn example of this important key issue, free of distracting surface marks. Today, the efforts of Bill Fivaz and others, plus a great deal of research by the American Numismatic Association Certification Service (when it was located in Colorado Springs and devoted to authentication and die study in addition to other things) have made description and detail possible of the different varieties. All are 1922-D cents for which the die became clogged or worn, giving the impression of a Philadelphia issue but accurately described as "1922 No D" as here or "1922 Plain." This is an interesting example of a "defective" coin being worth much more than a perfectly struck one, a numismatic curiosity.
