- 1670-A French Colonies 5 Sols. W-11605. Paris Mint. MS-64 (PCGS). CAC. Secure Holder. A sharp and appealing deep golden-gray specimen with slate highlights in the protected areas. A bold light source reveals strong luster and wisps of pale rose and blue iridescence throughout. The Red Book notes that 200,000 of these were struck for use in the French New World colonies, including Acadia, New France, the French settlements in Newfoundland, and the French West Indies. According to that reference, the silver coins were raised in value by one third in a vain attempt to keep them circulating, but they disappeared from pocket change and were all but unheard of by 1680, a short 10 years later. The present beauty is the finest of just three Mint State examples of the issue certified by PCGS. It easily ranks among the finest ever seen by us in the past, and bidding activity should reflect its scarce nature and its truly marvelous eye appeal.
