- Awe-Inspiring California Diamond Jubilee Commemorative
1925-S California Diamond Jubilee. MS-68 (PCGS).
A glorious Superb Gem with vibrant bands of rainbow color encircling the borders of each side. The underlying surfaces are impressively lustrous and satiny, supporting razor sharp definition throughout. This piece challenges the finest survivors of this popular issue and is destined for inclusion in an advanced commemorative silver set.
To commemorate the 75thanniversary of California's admission to the Union in 1850, the Act of February 24, 1925, authorized a maximum mintage of 300,000 half dollars. In the event only 150,000 pieces were struck at the San Francisco Mint, plus an additional 200 coins for Assay. Even this mintage proved overly optimistic for just 83,394 examples were actually distributed, the remaining 63,606 coins melted. Designed by Joseph Jacinto Mora and sold by the San Francisco Citizens' Committee, at $1/coin, survivors run the gamut from impaired pocket pieces in grades such as EF and AU, to virtually pristine beauties such as this awesome condition rarity PCGS MS-68 coin. The latter, of course, are seldom offered, since what few examples exist at this level are usually off the market for many years as part of tightly held collections. Interested parties are urged to enter strong bids for this rare and exciting offering.
