- 63.5 mm. Only 81 silver examples of this type were produced, as opposed to 500 of the far more common bronze impressions. This one is richly and originally toned in gently mottled steel-olive, pewter gray and, at the borders, reddish-gold. Accompanied by the original maroon leather box with the ANS seal and inscription in gilt lettering MEMORIAL MEDAL / ISSUED BY THE / AMERICAN NUMISMATIC AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIETY / TO COMMEMORATE THE / DEDICATION OF THE GRANT MONUMENT / APRIL 27TH 1897. The inside of the lid is marked, also in gilt lettering, TIFFANY & CO. / NEW YORK / PARIS . LONDON. The box is complete, although with considerable exterior scuffing. This exact medal and box are pictured on page 39 of Scott H. Miller's 2015 reference on the medallic art of the ANS, in which the author states, "As several silver medals have been seen in blue boxes, it is likely that this box may have originally been meant for a bronze medal." (Total: 1 medal; 1 box)
