- Noteworthy Choice Cameo Proof quality for this underrated rarity in the Proof gold dollar series. Dusted with silvery iridescence, both sides sport dominant color in a deep, rich, orange-honey color. Hints of pinkish-rose are also discernible as the surfaces dip into a light. The fields are nicely mirrored and support satiny, smartly impressed motifs. This is an elegant near-Gem specimen that will see spirited bidding among astute gold collectors.
As with most issues from the 1870s, the Proof 1872 gold dollar is underrated compared to its later date counterparts from the 1880s. Thirty Proofs were delivered on February 3, 1872, a paltry total that is even more significant when we consider that the mintage for the circulation strike 1872 gold dollar is a mere 3,500 pieces. Not many more than half of the Proofs were sold to contemporary collectors, the balance of the mintage either destroyed through melting or released into commercial channels. Estimates on the number of survivors vary somewhat, with PCGS accounting for 18 to 22 known, a range likely dictated by the combined PCGS and NGC certified population of 30 grading events and the extreme likelihood of resubmissions in that total. With the latter in mind, John W. Dannreuther provides a more conservative estimate of 14 to 16 known in his 2018 reference United States Proof Coins. Buying opportunities are even rarer than the number extant might imply and, indeed, this is our first offering of a Proof 1872 gold dollar since 2005. A fleeting opportunity that deserves undivided attention and an aggressive bidding strategy.
