- The 1854-D is one of the most elusive Dahlonega Mint gold dollars, ranking fifth in overall and fourth in high grade rarity in this mintmarked series per Doug Winter in the 2023 edition of <em>Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint: 1838-1861</em>. The mintage is a scant 2,935 pieces, the extant population probably on the order of 100 to 200 coins. The typical survivor is circulated, as here, but whereas most are in lower grades and/or significantly impaired, this piece retains enough detail to suggest an EF grade. Evidence in the form of faint hairlines argue for the VF-30 designation being a net grade from PCGS, but with pretty orange-apricot and powder blue colors, this is an unusually attractive coin in a circulated 1854-D gold dollar.
