- 1802 BD-1. Breen-1. Rarity-4. MS-61 (NGC). A popular variety in an impressive state of preservation. Bold cartwheel lustre sur- rounds frosty surfaces, with both sides showing rich yellow gold and traces of coppery toning around peripheries and devices. Far more lustrous than usually encountered at this grade level, with the cartwheel essentially intact on both sides instead of barely hanging on around the stars (as sometimes seen). Most details are very well defined, though some areas on the rim are a bit flat and the central reverse is somewhat affected by a small batch of vertical adjustment marks that leaves the eagle’s head somewhat softly rendered. The stars, legends, shield, feathers, date, and other important elements are as crisp as can be hoped for this issue. Some inconsequential hairlines are seen under a glass, a single thin scratch is hidden in Liberty’s hair to her forehead, no substantial nicks or other flaws. A very pretty coin, far finer than most at this grade level, boasting superb color and originality that connoisseurs will be pleased to see and for which they should be prepared to bid a premium.
Long called the 1802/ 1 overdate, this variety is now thought to have been overzealously described in the past. NGC no longer certifies this variety as an overdate, and PCGS refers to this as the 1802/“1” variety.
