- Only 44,070 circulation strike double eagles were coined at the Philadelphia Mint in 1889. Some entered into the channels of commerce and others were shipped overseas for international trade. As recently as 1982 numismatic researcher and author David W. Akers wrote "strictly Uncirculated examples are very scarce." In subsequent years, the familiar scenario of previously unknown pieces coming to light in overseas bank hoards was played out, but it appears that the Mint State population was supplemented by just a few hundred additional examples, not by thousands as was the case for some of the more common Philadelphia Mint issues of later years. This sharply struck, vivid and lustrous BU survivor is a find for the better date type collector or astute double eagle specialist.
