- 1840-D Liberty Half Eagle. Winter 3-B. Tall D. MS-61 (NGC). The 1840-D introduces a new obverse design for the Liberty Half Eagle series, the Mint simultaneously moving the mintmark from the obverse field below the portrait to the reverse below the eagle. Here represented by a Condition Census BU, this is a beautiful coin at the assigned grade level. Bright and flashy, both sides possess a nice blend of olive-orange color and a shimmering, satin texture. Grade-defining abrasions are small in size, and most are singularly inconspicuous to the eye. Pedigree concerns, nonetheless, compel us to call attention to a pair of tiny ticks on the obverse: one on Liberty's portrait behind the chin and the other in the field in front of the neck.<br /> A heavily circulated issue, the 1840-D has an extant population of fewer than 150 coins (per Doug Winter, 2003) from a fairly respectable mintage of 22,896 pieces. Mint State coins are of the utmost rarity and desirability, and the issue ranks 10th in high-grade rarity among the 26 dates in the Dahlonega Mint Half Eagle series.
