- 1925 United States Assay Commission Medal. Bronze. 51 mm. By George T. Morgan. JK AC-69a. Rarity-5. Edge Incuse MR. JACOB B. ECKFELDT. MS-64 (NGC).
Beautiful tannish-gold surfaces exhibit a few wisps of flint gray that are more prevalent on the obverse. This overall smooth and attractive medal is sure to appeal to discerning bidders.
Collectors of United States coinswill recognize the eagle on the reverse of the 1925 Assay Commission medal, as it bears a strong resemblance to the one used on the famous Morgan silver dollar of 1878 to 1921. The Mint received an order for 30 bronze medals for the 1925 Commission meeting, which was later raised to 50 medals, all of which were delivered on February 14 of that year. We have only offered one other example of this issue in recent years, the Keusch Collection specimen in our (Stack's) November 2008 sale. The present specimen is finer.
Jacob B. Eckfeldt served with the Philadelphia Mint from 1865 to 1930, the 1925 Commission coming during the 60th year of his employment.
Provenance: From the Richard Jewell Collection. Collector tag included.
