Made nervous by the French Revolution, William Pitt made a concerted effort to quash the radical movement in the early 1790s by rounding up a number of reformist sympathizers and putting them on trial for treason based on a 1792 royal proclamation on seditious writings. Among the thirty or so defendants were Thomas Hardy, John Horne Tooke, John Thelwall - each tried separately. Erskine and Gibbs defended all three and achieved three acquittals. However, those in power still thought the men guilty despite the verdict and additional acts were passed to suppress the reformist movement in the wake of the trials.
This medal offers deep argent fields shaded by cobalt, and lighter devices warmed by golden toning and splashes of rose and cerulean. A key event in the history of jurisprudence and defense of rights in Britain. Finely executed and very rare, especially in silver. Attractive and highly desirable.

.
