- Handsome antique silver surfaces with a few tinges of olive-russet along the right obverse border. Both the luster and strike are full throughout. The 1931 tells a familiar story for a Depression era Mercury dime issue. It is the final Philadelphia Mint date in this series before 1934, the 3,150,000 pieces produced sufficing to meet the needs of the struggling economy for several years. In truth, many of these coins remained in federal vaults until much later in the decade, when the economy finally recovered to a point where more dimes were needed in commerce. While examples could be obtained from the Treasury Department at face value in 1932, and many undoubtedly were, far more were obtained by numismatists in the second half of the decade, who set the coins aside for speculative purposes due to the relatively low mintage. The 1931 has always been obtainable in Mint State, as such, but in the very finest grades it is a formidable condition rarity. Most were simply not preserved with enough care to secure an MS-67 FB grade from today's leading third party certification services.
