- Last of the Proof gold dollars in the Mint's non-commemorative series, the 1889 has a reported mintage of 1,779 pieces. This is a generous total for a classic U.S. Mint Proof gold coin but, as John W. Dannreuther (2018) reports:
This is a very unusual year for Proof gold dollars and for all pre-1916 Proof gold coinage. The 1889 gold dollar has the distinction of having the highest Proof mintage of any pre-1916 gold issue (1,779), but it is not the most commonly seen Proof gold dollar. Proof gold collector Ed Trompeter completed the Proof gold set from 1859 to 1915 for all denominations, but supposedly had a great deal of trouble obtaining a suitable 1889 example, so much so that it was the last date Proof gold dollar that he acquired.
With such a large mintage, one would expect this year to be quite common in Proof, but many coins were used in jewelry, both in the United States and abroad...It was easier to obtain Proof gold dollars than finding a bank that had circulation strike examples, so jewelers often ordered 50 to 100 at a time!
Such usage reduced the population available to today's collectors to just 130 to 200 coins, and the Choice specimen offered here is a particularly desirable survivor. It is fully struck with bold cameo contrast between satiny motifs and reflective fields. Pretty color in light rose-gold further enhances the eye appeal. Sure to catch the eye of astute Proof gold enthusiasts.
The reverse is rotated approximately 30 degrees counterclockwise relative to normal coin alignment - a feature not often noted in classic U.S. Mint Proof coinage.
