- K-3, R.5. A famous and ever-popular Pioneer gold coin featuring Pike's Peak, which is quite distinctive among the various designs employed by the Gold Rush-era minters, many of which simply made an effort to mimic the familiar federal types. The reverse resembles the Federal design, however, the obverse dramatically differs through a volcanic-like representation of Pike's Peak, designed by an East coast engraver obviously without access to a picture or drawing of the mountain. The present deep green-gold example is moderately toned with brick-red hues, and is slightly circulated overall. Marks are inconsequential except for a tiny divot in the field below the E of DENVER and a couple of milling marks on either side of the eagle's head. Otherwise, the planchet is smooth and the edges are high and virtually not "dinged." Listed on page 410 of the 2019 Guide Book. (PCGS 10137)
