Exceptionally Rare Pattern 5 Sen from the Reign of Taisho JAPAN. Copper-Nickel 5 Sen Pattern, Year 5 (1916). Osaka Mint. Taisho (Yoshihito). NGC MS-65. KM-Pn44; cf. JNDA-01-38 (circulation strike); cf. JC-09-38 (same); cf. Jacobs/Vermeule-V119 (var.); cf. Bank of Japan Collection-173. Variety with flower insets within cartouche surrounding central hole. Differing slightly from the design that ultimately was adopted for circulation, this piece displays flowers within the cartouche. This added design element elevates the piece to a work of pure mastery, and is one of the most beautifully rendered examples that has ever been produced by Japan.
