- After a major recession that hit the economy after World War I and the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1919, the need for coins dropped drastically. After falling to a series low mintage in 1921, nothing other than cents, silver dollars, and double eagles were struck in 1922. Coinage of half dollars resumed in 1923, with only the San Francisco mint issuing coins, with a mintage of 2,178,000. Like most of the other early dates, the 23-S is a major condition rarity. Ranking among the top dozen and a half examples graded at PCGS, this is a very impressive GEM! A strong, radiant luster beams all over on both sides. Clearly an early state of the dies, with the reverse showing die polish lines in the fields that had not worn off, the strike is generally bold, showing only light weakness at the extreme central portions of the design. Impeccable preservation, this beauty shows only the most tiny ticks under the aid of a strong glass. A splash of gold in the right obverse field is subtle, but adds dimension to the impressive eye appeal and originality. PCGS 54, NGC 24, CAC 9. There are eight examples graded MS65+ and just 10 are graded higher. This one brought $19,975 in the 2017 FUN auction and the most recent one brought $20,400 in the 2019 FUN auction. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $20,000; in MS66 the Price Guide value jumps to $35,000. Worthy of a strong bid and placement in a world class GEM set of Walkers. Cert. Number 81939530 PCGS # 6586.00
