- 39.7 mm. 112.6 grains. Paper backing inscribed in ink in an 18th century hand "No. 298 / La flotte anglaise / chasser du Canada / 1690" and in a more modern hand in pencil "size 25." Attractive deep pewter gray with some darker encrustation within some letters and design elements. An attempted puncture or drillmark is seen near 12 o'clock. Somewhat worn, but overall well preserved, a unique relic from this die's useful life within the Paris Mint. While French cliches of this era are generally scarce but not rare, and cliches of Betts issues like the Comitia Americana medals are seen occasionally, this is the only cliche of a 17th century Paris Mint historical medal that was in the grand expanse of the Ford collection and is the only one your cataloguer can recall seeing as well. Some rim cuds near 9 o'clock suggest this is a fairly advanced state of this die rather than a product of its initial design stage. Rare and important for specialists in this series. This reverse die was used for all Betts numbers from 68 to 73, each married to a different obverse.
