Vlack 13-88CT
1788 Machin's Mills Halfpenny. Vlack 13-88CT, Miller 101-D, W-8080. Rarity-5-. GEORGIVS III. AU-58 (PCGS).
86.1 grains. Described by Craige on his envelope as "Finest Known! Gem." The surfaces are frosty chocolate brown, mostly naturally granular, but otherwise smooth and showing beautiful lustrous gloss. Sharply detailed, probably not worn at all. Well centered and free of any post-striking flaws. Struck from a badly clashed and broken state of the dies, right obverse swollen, date and reverse exergue incuse above head, reverse cracked at IB with arc cracks heading towards center and base of globe. Die states apparently as Ford IX:508, a "near Very Fine" that brought $2,760. The Boyd-Ford collection included four specimens of this variety, none of which was graded higher than the aforementioned piece. Typical specimens tend to be in the Fine range, often granular or ugly. A piece like this is essentially unheard of. Craige had been an advanced collector of both Machin's Mills pieces and Connecticuts for over a decade when he declared this piece "finest known," and we think he may not have been exaggerating. The Vlack plate piece was maybe EF. If this doesn't rank as the finest extant, not only would we be surprised, but we would also be sure it ranks within the top two or three.
PCGS# 472.
Provenance: From the Ted L. Craige Collection. Purchased from Al Overton on June 10, 1969.
