LRCA is pleased to offer this numismatic prize in our Final Premier Session. This lightly circulated Pan-Pac $50 Octagonal, along with the previous lot, is the grand highlight of the sale. One of the most popular issues in all of American numismatics, only 643 were officially sold, making it one of the lowest mintage federal coins. Add to that its impressive heft (nearly 2.5 ounces of pure gold) and unique shape, and collectors have longed to own an example for over a century. Light wear is mostly seen on the owl. Bright yellow gold color is enhanced by a satiny mint luster. There are a number of microscopic marks and ticks, visible only with a strong glass, none of which are distracting to the naked eye. A very important opportunity for the collector, as these are usually not seen in straight graded AU, most non-Mint State coins do show some issues that would preclude numerical grading. PCGS 4, NGC 0. None have sold in auction. The most recent AU55 sold for $58,750 in the 2017 FUN auction. In 53, the current Collector's Universe value is listed at $51,000.
