- The Vlack Plate 8-74A Machin
Ex: Ted Craige
1774 Machin's Mills Halfpenny. Vlack 8-74A, W-7760. Rarity-4. GEORGIVS III. VF-35 (PCGS).
110.2 grains. Attractive light brown with the sort of gloss that comes from faded luster. A Condition Census example of this variety, chosen by Vlack from the Ted Craige collection to feature on his groundbreaking 1974 plate of "Early English Counterfeit Halfpence Struck in America." This is actually sharper than the beautiful Ringo specimen, graded AU-50 when sold in the 2000 C4 sale. This piece shows a few old marks at central obverse, a very minor rim bruise at 12 o'clock on the obverse, and a tiny rim nick at 6 o'clock. Two little rim hits on the reverse below 3 o'clock are almost not worth mentioning. The portrait is bold and even the central reverse shows decent detail. Superb eye appeal and sharpness places this among the top three or four known, perhaps tied with the Ringo coin and behind a piece in a New York City collection. We cannot recall the last time a Vlack plate coin hit the market.
PCGS# 932.
Provenance: From the John "Jack" Royse Collection.
PCGS Population: 1; none finer.
