- 1854-D Liberty Quarter Eagle. Winter 17-M, the only known dies. MS-63 (PCGS). By the mid 1850s the Dahlonega Mint found itself in an economic backwater at the Southern reaches of the Lower Appalachian region. Comparatively little gold was then being mined in that region of the country, and much of the California gold that was shipped east found its way to either the Philadelphia or (much less so) New Orleans mints. It is little wonder, then, that the 1854-D Quarter Eagle has a paltry mintage of 1,760 pieces. This issue is obviously very rare in all grades, and it is comparable to the 1840-D in terms of total number of coins believed extant. In high grades, the 1854-D ranks sixth of 20 Dahlonega Mint Quarter Eagle issues with fewer than 10 (!) Mint State pieces known.<br /> Although we have been unable to establish the prior pedigree of this important coin, certified population data confirms it as Condition Census #2 for the issue. Light, even, rose-gold color blankets surfaces that are silent on the subject of individually distracting abrasions. The luster is typically subdued for the issue with a satiny, somewhat granular texture. Lack of detail at the rims notwithstanding, the overall definition presents as relatively bold, that is if one is also willing to overlook the often-seen softness to the eagle's left (facing) leg on the reverse. Another attractive and highly significant offering for the advanced Southern gold specialist.
