- THE BIG CYPRESS COLLECTION Ex Virginia Collection. This is a very high end and pleasing example of the HM-1 die pairing, listed as a Rarity-3. There is an interesting "scalloped" die crack that loops among several of the obverse stars, perhaps accounting for this die marriage's scarce status. Indeed, the newly published reference on the series by Daryl J. Haynor, estimates that about 270 examples survive in all grades. Exceptionally sharp details are impressed on both sides of this high end example, showing just the faintest trace of friction on the high points. A strong luster highlights medium-gold coloration and the surfaces show only a touch of light, unobtrusive contact. This is also the Plate Coin in the 2020 Haynor reference on Classic Head gold coins. The Classic Head series went many years as an underappreciated and poorly understood series. Short lived, issued only from 1834 to 1838, they were stuck between the early "old tenor" gold coins and the extensive and long lived Liberty Head series. Only a small monograph had been published prior to the 2020 publication of Daryl Haynor's reference; since the publication of this book, appreciation and understanding of this series has dramatically increased. PCGS 103, NGC 447, CAC 45. This was the most recent example to sell bringing $4,560 in August 2022. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $4,000. An affordable and important coin for the early gold specialist, how cool is it to own the Plate Coin from this series' standard reference! Cert. Number 81802331 PCGS # 765188
