- After years of wholesale export of U.S. gold coins to be melted because their bullion value exceeded the face value, the Coinage Act of June 1834 reduced the weights allowing them to circulate in domestic commerce. William Kneass’s rendition of Liberty graces the obverse, while an adaptation of the John Reich reverse in use since 1807 continued to be used (without the motto E Pluribus Unum). Unlike the “Capped Head” issues of 1813-34, these did circulate and are more often found circulated than in mint state (the opposite is true for the earlier type). This one has a rich honey gold color with accents of rose and olive. Very pretty. The strike is bold with most details fully defined, and only some light weakness noted. PCGS 43, NGC 93. The last PCGS graded coin sold in June 2015 for $3,995. How is this for an interesting stat, since 1990 only a dozen PCGS-graded coins have been sold in auction (according to our records). These are tougher than you would think! A great early type coin in MS grade that will not break the bank! Certification Number 80597064 PCGS # 8171
