- The JD-1 is the more popular of the two known die pairings of the Proof 1887 three-cent nickel, both of which are overdates. Since the Coinage Act of 1873 required the destruction of all dated dies at the end of each year, the 1887/6 is probably the result of error on the part of a Mint employee; although he was working to prepare new dies for coinage in 1887, the workman seems to have first grabbed the old 1886 logotype punch by mistake. Represented here by a beautiful golden-tinged Gem, this Strong Overdate specimen clearly shows bold remnants of the 6 underdigit when examined with the aid of a loupe. Smooth and inviting.
