- Rare Contemporary Counterfeit 1740-)( Sou Marque "Vlack-279a" Contemporary Counterfeit 1740-)( Sou Marque. In Imitation of Besançon Mint. "Vlack-279a". Rarity-7. VF-20 (PCGS). 44.9 grains. A richly toned, medium copper-brown example with little to no silvering. The surfaces are hard and glossy, obverse pleasingly smooth, reverse with numerous wispy pin scratches in the field. The design elements are crudely cut and hand-engraved, some of the peripheral letters doubled, which features confirm this coin as a contemporary counterfeit. Vlack lists no contemporary counterfeit sou marques of any date in imitation of the Besançon Mint in his 2004 reference on the French billon coinage in the Americas. Interestingly, the Ford XIII:282 coin appears to share the same diagnostics of the present example; it was attributed as Vlack-279a in that sale (no stop before SIT, stop after SIT). We believe that Vlack-279a actually refers to this type, although Vlack overlooked its status as a contemporary counterfeit. Provenance: From the Sydney F. Martin Collection.
