- This die pairing of the 1796 silver dollar was first distinguished by John W. Haseltine in 1881. Writing in his outstanding new (2022) reference on the early silver dollars of 1795 to 1798, Harry E. Salyards asserts that the entire mintage of the 1796 BB-63 amounted to just 3,500 to 4,500 of the 8,770 coins delivered on January 18, 1798. The balance of that delivery was comprised of BB-66 and the exceedingly rare BB-64 varieties. Although BB-63 and BB-66 are the only two collectible die marriages of the 1796 Small Date, Small Letters <em>Guide Book </em>variety, with a mere 75 to 125 coins extant (per Slayards) the BB-63 is one of the scarcer varieties of the Draped Bust, Small Eagle silver dollar as a type.
