- 1854-D Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter 31-W. Medium D. AU-58 (PCGS). CAC.
An exciting offering for the advanced Southern gold variety enthusiast, this is a Condition Census example of the 1854-D Medium D attribution. A handsome coin, both sides exhibit a bold blend of golden-apricot color and virtually complete satin luster. The strike is uncommonly sharp for the issue with no mentionable softness either at the borders or in the centers. Sure to sell for a strong premium to a discerning collector.
There seems to be some confusion regarding die diagnostics and/or pairings for this issue in the 2003 edition of Doug Winter's reference on Dahlonega Mint gold coinage. The author describes Obverse 30 as having the 1 in the date very close to the truncation and Obverse 31 as having the same digit well below the truncation. Winter 30-W is listed therein as the Medium D attribution, but the present example was clearly struck from Obverse 31 (as described by Winter) even though the 31-W pairing is not listed by the author. Given that the Large D example offered above is also from an unlisted die pairing, perhaps a revision to the published varieties for the 1854-D are in order?
