- Here is a very special coin, a circulated 1856 Flying Eagle cent. The first date of small cents struck for circulation. Mint records show that at least 634 were struck for "presentation purposes" for members of Congress and other VIPs. An additional amount were struck for well connected collectors, and an unknown amount for circulation. PCGS CoinFacts figures that in total, somewhere between 1,500 and 2,150 were struck. From this tiny number, collectors of small cents are forced to choose from an even smaller pool of survivors. Needless to say, from low-quality problem coins to GEMS, there is always strong demand. This pleasing totally CHOICE Fine has an even, problem free wear pattern on the devices and in the fields. There is a wealth of details in the central obverse feathers. The eye appeal for the grade is actually high end. PCGS 13, NGC 4, CAC 1. Needless to say, these are RARE and RARELY offered in auction. Just look at these MOST RECENT comps: PCGS PR10 CAC sold for $7,638 in April 2013 (five years ago); NGC PR12 at $7,188 in November 2004 (nearly 14 years ago); NGC PR15 for $7,763 in October 2011 (nearly seven years ago); PCGS PR20 for $8,050 in April 2009 (nine years ago). The current PCGS Price Guide value is $9,250 and it would not be a shock if this wonderfully CHOICE circulated example brought somewhere near that! Good luck! Cert. Number 25202542 PCGS # 2037
