- FROM THE UNFORGETTABLE COLLECTION Ex Shepherd, as noted on the old green insert. This is one of the most SENSATIONAL Antietam half dollars we have EVER seen! This coin is off the charts amazing in every sense. WOW! First the toning sets this MONSTER apart from its peers. Both sides are reminiscent of Jacob's coat; every shade of the spectrum is visible, and they come to a bold vivacity when rotated in a light. Deep crimson, royal violet, dark orange, and soft verdant hues really pop. The central obverse has just a subtle touch of gold, as if a spotlight is being placed on the profiles of Robert E. Lee and George McClellan, the commanding generals of the Confederate and Union Armies, respectively. The famed Burnside Bridge on the reverse looks sculpted and 3-D on the reverse, the tranquil landscape on the reverse looking nothing like it did on the chaotic day in September 1862 which was the bloodiest single day battle in the entire Civil War. The eye appeal is simply STUNNING. PCGS 23, NGC 23, CAC 17. There are two, essentially ancient APRs for similar patinated coins (though those looked darker for sure); one was in January 2005 for $21,850 and another back in September 2003 for $26,450. For a coin like this it is probably best to ignore the more recent comps and disregard the published price guides, as the bidding action will send this coin into a frenzied charge of bidding. We would not be surprised if a new auction record was set when this coin crosses the block! Cert. Number 1603173 PCGS # 9229
