- Scarce Misplaced Splash Error on a Saint Patrick Farthing
Undated (Circa 1663-1672) St. Patrick or Mark Newby Farthing. Breen-213var, W-11500. Copper. Sea Beasts Below King, Stars in Legends. VG-10.
75.0 grains. Nice light brown, glossy if extremely finely granular, a bit more granular at centers. Fairly well centered and attractive, with just a post-circulation scratch through O of FLOREAT noted as a defect. The splash shows some green specks and it mis-located 180 degrees away from where it should be, just left of 6 o'clock on the obverse -- an error type that is surprisingly scarce on this coinage. The reverse shows a substantial die crack through L of PLEBS, and the base of S in QVIESCAT is filled and connected to C. On the obverse, a crack joins the base of X to the dots that follow. Same dies as Griffee:197, his G42-5/5a, though this is in a later and more interesting die state. Craige noted that this variety was "Not classified in FCCB[oyd] Coll." Griffee found 13 examples, most in this grade or lower.
PCGS# 42.
Provenance: From the Ted L. Craige Collection.
