- Only 600 proofs were struck of this date/design. In trying to improve striking quality, the Mint experimented with the spacing of the letters and stars on the reverse. The easy way to identify the pattern or "prototype" reverse is the star point pointing directly at the center of the first "A" in "AMERICA." These almost never come to the market, so do not miss out on this important piece.
