Unlisted 1740-)( Sou Marque with Reversed 4 in Date 1740-)( Sou Marque. Besançon Mint. Vlack-279b, var. Reversed 4. EF-45 (PCGS). 28.7 grains. Reversed 4 in date, unlisted in Vlack, and also with no stop after SIT in the obverse legend. Medium gray obverse, a little darker on the reverse. Some streaks and blotchy toning areas visible on the latter side, planchet striations in the center of the obverse. Surfaces microgranular. The die work appears to be regal despite the fact that the obverse die is blundered (i.e., this is not a contemporary counterfeit). Provenance: From the Sydney F. Martin Collection.
