- 1817 Capped Bust Half Dollar. O-104. Rarity-6. AG-3 (PCGS).
One of the most sought after die pairings of the Capped Bust half dollar series, when found at all most are in high circulated grades. One reported closely matches the present coin, that being the Farley example sold in Sheridan Downey's July 2002 auction as lot 9, also with the strong "moonbreak" obverse where Liberty's face has worn smooth from her nose to chest, as the obverse die failed and sunk in this area, causing its early replacement and rarity of this die pairing. Natural steel-gray fields with lighter silver on the worn areas and devices. The obverse rims are intact and the balance of the devices are clear, save for the central area which was affected by the die sinking. On the reverse the rim has worn down in areas causing wear into the legends with a similar and matching steel-gray fields and lighter silver on the worn devices. One of perhaps 20 to 25 known in all from these dies and certainly high on the want lists of more than a few specialists of this challenging series.
PCGS# 6109.
