- 1802/'1' BD-1. Rarity-4. MS-61 (PCGS). A delightful example of this very rare coin which is in Mint State. Classic light yellow-gold with slightly more golden hues on the high points. Clean surfaces display ample lustre in the fields and moderate tiny handling marks, best seen with a strong loupe. No adjustment marks and the strike is better than average, with solid definition on Liberty's hair and the eagle's wing and shield, although the expected minor softness is found on the eagle's head and chest, devices that are opposite the greatest depths of the obverse device of Liberty's head. Curiously a single obverse die was used to coin all 1802 quarter eagles, but it was paired with three different reverse dies—many of which were used to coin dimes of this era, which happened to be precisely the same size and reverse design at the time. The 1802/1 overdate is known on half eagles and silver dollars and for many years quarter eagles were believed to be overdates as well. The small extra notch on the 2 touching the neck was thought to be the under digit 1 beneath the 2, but further research has shown that no overdate exists on this particular die and the '1' is now noted in quotes on the PCGS insert. No quarter eagles had been coined since 1798 and dies would likely have been engraved as needed while this denomination was issued so sporadically during these early years. One of the finer examples to come down to us today, and a coin that would grace any advanced cabinet.
PCGS Population: 6; 10 finer (MS-63 finest).
